The Royal Choral Society presents A Choral Celebration!

May 7, 2023

150th Anniversary Concert

Join the Royal Choral Society for a choral extravaganza to celebrate its 150th anniversary.

Since its inaugural concert in the Hall on 8th May 1872, the Royal Choral Society has been conducted by some of the world’s greatest musicians, including GounodVerdiDvořákElgar and Vaughan Williams. This celebratory evening will showcase the highlights of the choral repertoire, alongside music by Handel, Mozart, Coleridge-Taylor, Rachmaninoff and Panufnik, plus a few surprises along the way.

Parry’s I Was Glad will bring the concert to a glorious finale, with a choir on stage and in the auditorium of more than 1000 voices. If you sing, this will be your chance to join in ‘beltissimo’ for Parry’s I Was Glad, together with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the mighty 999-stop organ, played by Richard Pearce, all under the baton of the choir’s Music Director of 27 years, Richard Cooke.

After the Covid woes, let’s raise the roof of London’s favourite venue and celebrate the sheer joy of singing!

PROGRAMME INCLUDES – Gounod Soldiers Chorus from Faust, Dvorak Eia Mater from Stabat Mater, Coleridge-Taylor Hiawatha’s Wedding Feast (excerpt), Verdi Dies Irae from Requiem, Mozart Ave Verum Corpus, Elgar Prelude and Praise to the Holiest from The Dream of Gerontius, Handel Hallelujah Chorus from Messiah, Holst The Hymn of Jesus, Panufnik Cradle Song, Jenkins Benedictus from The Armed Man, Rachmaninoff Bogoroditse Dyevo from All Night Vigil, Parry I Was Glad.

I have been asked if I would consider running a trip to this celebration and knowing that many of you belong to local choirs, I wondered if it might be of interest. With the concert starting at 2.30pm, we anticipate being back in Dorking at about 6.30pm. Leaving Dorking at 11am, there will be time to enjoy lunch at one of the Royal Albert Hall restaurants (advance booking strongly advised) if you wish, or, hoping with have a beautiful Spring day, Hyde Park and all its attractions are right on the door step, along with world-famous museums, Knightsbridge and Harrods!
